Special Needs Assistants

Two positions are currently available as special needs assistants. One position is approximately 25% (10 hours/week) and the other is approximately 50% (20 hours/week). The positions could potentially be combined, depending on scheduling needs.

 

The positions are connected to one-to-one follow up of individual students with special educational needs within the autism spectrum. The role of the assistant(s) will be defined in relationship to the needs of the student, but some tasks would include:

 

  • Assisting student in engaging with teaching, learning and interaction within the regular classroom

  • Providing support in transitions and outside break times

  • Assisting student in working individually or in small groups outside the classroom

  • Collaborating with classroom teacher and/or special education teacher in preparing individually differentiated learning activities

  • Facilitating positive social interactions with peers

  • Participating in collaborative meetings with special education team, contact teacher, parents, or other external agencies

  • Contributing feedback and observations to contact teacher or special education teachers

  • Participating in professional development opportunities (by agreement with line manager)

 

As the position will involve working closely with the contact teachers and specialist teachers, collaborative skills will be essential. The school is seeking a candidate with the following characteristics:

  • Clear communicator, both oral and written

  • Fluent English speaker

 

Preferred candidate qualities:

  • Formal qualifications within working with children and young people (for example barne- og ungdomsarbeider)

  • Some knowledge of Norwegian

  • Daily availability

  • Knowledge of and experience with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders), PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and/or TEACHH

 

Assistants would be supervised and guided by special education teachers and/or the school’s educational psychologist. The Head of Primary is the line manager for the positions.
